Bengaluru-based Startup Calmosis will be Delivering Cannabis Products to Manage Stress and Sleep Issues

Cannabis contains CBD and THC, which are known for their therapeutic effects. CBD helps with pain relief, inflammation, migraines, anxiety, and seizures, while THC is the psychoactive compound that causes a "high" effect.

In India's busy cities, there’s a growing need for effective and accessible health solutions. One major issue has been the safe and legal use of cannabis.

Since 1985, cannabis, also known as ganja when used recreationally, has been banned in India, making it illegal to buy, sell, or use. Despite this, the black market has flourished, with cannabis being traded through social media, leading to unsafe products and criminal activities.

Interestingly, cannabis has been a part of India’s traditional medicine for a long time. It has been used to treat chronic pain, anxiety, insomnia, and other conditions. Yet, the strict laws have made it hard for people to access these benefits.

Activists have long argued for the medicinal use of cannabis, highlighting its advantages and its references in ancient Ayurvedic texts. In 2022, the Indian government began to relax the laws, permitting the sale of cannabis for medicinal purposes under strict conditions.

This change allowed vendors to legally sell cannabis products if they had a prescription from an Ayurvedic doctor, aiming to reduce illegal trade and ensure patients received safe, tested, and effective products.

In response to these changes, Karan Naidu and Praveen Singh Rajput launched Calmosis in Bengaluru in 2023. Their Ayurveda-based wellness startup focuses on providing high-quality, natural cannabis extracts and oils to help manage stress and sleep issues. The founders were motivated by personal experiences and the need to offer a legal, safe alternative.

Cannabis, or ganja, often faces stigma in India due to its recreational use, but it also has notable medicinal benefits without known toxic side effects. Cannabis contains CBD and THC, which are known for their therapeutic effects. CBD helps with pain relief, inflammation, migraines, anxiety, and seizures, while THC is the psychoactive compound that causes a "high" effect.

Karan Naidu, an IT graduate, saw the benefits of medicinal cannabis when his mother had trouble sleeping and relied on allopathic pills that had side effects. Learning that cannabis could offer the same relief without adverse effects inspired him to start Calmosis.

Praveen Singh Rajput, a serial entrepreneur with an MBA, brings his business expertise to the startup. He also runs FRINZA, a gifting marketplace.

Calmosis offers two main products: Peace Mantra and Sleep Mantra, both priced at Rs 4500 for a 20 ml bottle. Peace Mantra helps with stress, anxiety, migraines, and pain, and also promotes sexual wellness. Sleep Mantra, on the other hand, aids in overcoming insomnia and promotes restful sleep.

Looking ahead, Calmosis plans to expand its product range to include solutions for period pain and CBD oils for pets. They also aim to enter international markets such as the US, Europe, and Southeast Asia.
